Coolant Temperature Sensor

Coolant Temperature Sensor

A Coolant Temperature Sensor can be used with your Elite ECU for datalogging and for Engine Protection purposes. Temperature sensors are typically two wire sensors; a signal wire that is connected to an AVI, and a signal ground wire.

Wiring Tab

Options

Input Type

Select the type of Coolant Temperature Sensor to be connected.

Analogue Voltage

Selected when the supplied calibration data for the sensor is in voltage. This will require an Analogue Voltage Input (AVI) to be used and configured.

Analogue Resistance

Selected when the supplied calibration data for the sensor is in resistance. This will require an Analogue Voltage Input (AVI) to be used and configured.

Thermocouple Type K

Selected when a thermocouple input is to be used. Typically with a Haltech Thermo Couple Adapter (TCA2 or TCA4).

Connections

Coolant Temperature Input

Select an appropriate input to use for the Coolant Temperature Sensor. An AVI (Analogue Voltage Input) should be used.

Pull Up

Typically the pull up should be enabled with any two-wire analogue temperature sensor. If the sensor is being shared with another ECU, such as with a piggyback installation with an OEM ECU, then the other ECU will generally include a necessary pull up and this setting should be set to Disabled.

Calibration Tab

This allows calibrations for a Coolant Temperature Sensor to be loaded or saved. A number of calibrations come pre-installed with the ESP Software package. If your sensor is not listed, a custom calibration can be created with the data provided by the sensor manufacturer. The default calibration will be for the Haltech 127°C Temperature Sensor.

From the image below:

1 – Selecting the yellow Open icon on the top left will allow the loading of a pre-configured calibration file.

2 – Selecting the blue Disk icon next to the open icon will allow the saving of your custom calibration file.

Display Tab

Warning Minimum

When the Coolant Temperature reads below this amount, any coolant temperature items on the ESP software will flash Red as a warning of low coolant temperature.

Warning Maximum

When the Coolant temperature reads above this amount, any coolant temperature items on the ESP software will flash Red as a warning of high coolant temperature.

Diagnostics Tab

The settings in this tab allow limits to be set for the detection of either fault conditions, or conditions that could be considered to cause engine damage related to the Coolant Temperature Sensor.

Raw Min

When enabled, this allows for the error code P0117 to be set when the voltage is below the set amount. This is used to detect a short or disconnection with the wiring. If the Engine Protection function is active a DTC Severity level can be selected for this condition if desired. (Default = Disabled)

Raw Max

When enabled, this allows for the error code P0118 to be set when the voltage is above the set amount. This is used to detect a short or disconnection with the wiring. If the Engine Protection function is active a DTC Severity level can be selected for this condition if desired. (Default = Disabled)

Operating Max

When enabled allows detection of Coolant temperature conditions that could indicate a sudden spike in coolant temperature. This will activate the DTC P0128. If the Engine Protection function is active a DTC Severity level can be selected for this condition if desired. (Default = Disabled)
