RPM Shift Point

RPM Shift Point

RPM Shift Point Table

This table is only available if RPM Shift Point Enable is on in the Transmission Control function.
Like the Auto Mode Shift Points Table, this is a special table which behaves differently to normal tables. The left axis is fixed to using the RPM Shift Point Axis channel.

It is similar to Auto Mode Shift Points, with the obvious exception that Engine RPM is used instead of the Main Shift Point Variable, and this table remains active while the Gear Selector is in Manual.
Ensure that the engine RPM drop from an up-shift won't cause a down-shift straight away when reaching the new gear. e.g. if 1st -> 2nd shift happens at 5000 rpm, and the difference in gear ratios brings the engine RPM down to 4000 rpm once in 2nd gear, the 2nd -> 1st shift point should be below this. Otherwise the Transmission Control function may continually keep trying to shift up and down between 1st and 2nd gears.

Recommendations

Many spark ignition engines (petrol engines rather than diesels) are designed such that their power doesn't drop away all that much at high RPM. Almost all engines used in motorsport fall into this category. In these cases, it is ideal to shift at the highest possible RPM.
In engines where the power drops away at higher RPM (common in diesel and other engines designed to operate at low RPM with high torque, as well as some race car engines where the rules specify an air restrictor on the intake), it can be beneficial to shift below the highest possible RPM. Selecting the RPM shift point for optimal performance requires analysis of the power curve along with data on the different gear ratios. The theoretical ideal shift point is when the power in the current gear equals the power the engine will make after shifting up gear.
