Wideband O2 Sensor

Wideband O2 Sensor

A Wideband O2 sensor can be used by the Elite ECU for monitoring purposes, or for closed-loop O2 Control. A wideband sensor, by definition, measures a broad section of the AFR scale. As such, a Wideband O2 sensor is a preferred sensor to be used for accurate engine tuning. Haltech manufactures CAN-based Wideband O2 kits which benefit from direct communications with the sensor controller box, thereby allowing the ECU to know the sensor status. This is turn allows better fault detection and safer operation than conventional analogue wideband O2 kits which do not report sensor status to the Elite ECU.

Note that wideband O2 sensors cannot be connected directly to Elite ECUs (with the exception of the Elite Pro Plug-in Ford Falcon ECU). An external controller unit must be used with wideband O2 sensors.

Wiring Tab

NOTE: Below, an on-board Wideband Sensor on the Elite Pro Plug-in Ford Falcon ECU is set as the Input type

Options

Position

Indicate the position of the Wideband Sensor on the exhaust. Choose by Bank (only available if at least two banks are set up), cylinder,Unassigned or Overall.

Input type

On Board/CAN Wideband Controller

Selected when a Haltech CAN WB kit is connected to your Elite ECU, or an on-board wideband is used where available (such as in the Elite Pro Plug-in series ECUs)

Analogue Voltage

Selected when an analogue wideband O2 kit from another manufacturer is being connected.

Connections

Shows how the Wideband O2 Sensor is connected to the Elite ECU. This allows for selection of which sensor on a CAN based Wideband O2 kit is to be used for Wideband O2 Sensor 1, Sensor 2, etc. When analogue wideband O2 kits are to be connected, the input wire which is to be used by the Elite ECU is selected in this section. It is advised that a shielded AVI such as AVI1 or AVI6 be used for analogue connections, and care should be taken to ensure the shielded does not contact the inner signal wire when making connections.

Calibration Tab

Calibration tab is only available when the Analogue Voltage is selected as the input type

This allows calibrations for a Wideband O2 Sensor to be loaded or saved. A number of calibrations come pre-installed with the ESP Software package. If your sensor is not listed, a custom calibration can be created with the data provided by the sensor manufacturer. The default calibration will be for the Haltech 150psi Pressure Sensor.

From the image above:

1 – Selecting the yellow Open icon on the top left will allow the loading of a pre-configured calibration file.

2 – Selecting the blue Disk icon next to the open icon will allow the saving of your custom calibration file.

Diagnostics Tab

Raw Min

Available only when an Analogue Wideband O2 is selected. When enabled, and the Wideband O2 Voltage drops below this amount, a corresponding DTC is flagged.

Associated DTC: P0131

DTC Severity

When this DTC has been flagged there is the option to set an Engine Protection severity level. This can be None where no Engine Protection is not Enabled, or a Level 1, 2, or 3 can be selected when Engine Protection is Enabled.

Raw Max

Available only when an Analogue Wideband O2 is selected. When enabled, and the Wideband O2 Voltage exceeds this amount, a corresponding DTC is flagged.

Associated DTC: P0132

DTC Severity

When this DTC has been flagged there is the option to set an Engine Protection severity level. This can be None where Engine Protection is not Enabled, or a Level 1, 2, or 3 can be selected when Engine Protection is Enabled.

Operating Max

When enabled, allows detection of AFR conditions that could cause engine damage. All of the following conditions must be reached simultaneously to activate the DTC. If the Engine Protection function is active, a DTC Severity level can be selected for this condition if desired. (Default = Disabled)

Maximum

The measured AFR must be leaner that this value.

Delay Time

The amount of time the AFR is leaner than the Maximum.

Minimum RPM

The RPM must be higher than this value

Precondition

Allows engine load to be considered. Select from MAP, TPS, or Both.

Minimum MAP

Active when either MAP or Both has been selected for the Precondition. MAP must be higher than this value to activate the DTC.

Minimum TPS

Active when either TPS or Both has been selected for the Precondition. TPS must be higher than this amount to activate the DTC.

Associated DTC: P1276

DTC Severity

When this DTC has been flagged there is the option to set an Engine Protection severity level. This can be None where no Engine Protection is not Enabled, or a Level 1, 2, or 3 can be selected when Engine Protection is Enabled.

Sensor Failure

When enabled, allows detection of a sensor error or failure to trigger a DTC.

Wideband Sensor Status Information

The Wideband O2 channels in ESP will display the Lambda values from the wideband sensors. Under certain conditions, these channels will also display if there is a fault. See below for the Wideband O2 channel state descriptions and datalog values:

Channel Display

Datalog Values

Description

Sensor Cold

-0.06

This is displayed when the sensor is not yet up to operating temperature, typically on startup.

Condensation Phase

-0.09

If an O2 sensor is heated before starting a cold engine, the water droplets that pass through the exhaust system upon engine startup will cause condensation to collide with the hot sensor. This Thermal Shock can destroy wideband sensors. The Condensation Phase is when the sensor is operated with reduced heater power to avoid this phenomenon.

Free Air

-0.07

When the sensor is reading atmospheric air, the status will show Free Air.

Heater Short Circuit

-0.08

If there is a short circuit on the heater circuit, this will be displayed.

Controller Inactive

-0.10

Elite Pro Plug-in on-board wideband controller: the channel will display Controller Inactive if the engine is not running and thirty seconds has passed. The heater will therefore turn off and remain inactive until the engine starts.

External LSU 4.9 wideband controllers: the channel will display Controller Inactive if there is a fault with the heater circuit and it cannot turn on and function correctly.

Sensor Short Circuit

-0.04

If there is a short circuit in the sensor, this will be displayed.

Sensor Open Circuit

-0.05

If there is an open circuit (for example, if the sensor is disconnected from the controller), this will be shown.

Battery Voltage Low

-0.02

If the battery voltage is too low for the wideband controller to operate correctly, the channel will display Battery Voltage Low. This only applies to external LSU 4.9 wideband controllers.

Battery Voltage High

-0.03

If the battery voltage is too high for the wideband controller to operate correctly, the channel will display Battery Voltage High. This only applies to external LSU 4.9 wideband controllers.

Error

-0.01

If there is an error with a WBC1 or WBC2 unit, this will be displayed. If the external LSU 4.9 wideband controller is undiscovered on startup, this will show.

Time Out

-0.11

For external LSU 4.9 wideband controllers only. If the CAN connection is interrupted or disconnected, the channel will show Time Out and short term fuel trims will remain at 0% until communication is restored.
