Alternator Control for VE Commodores

This alternator is similar to those used on earlier Commodore LS engines but features a PWM-controlled regulator instead. It can be identified by its connector — the earlier unit uses a larger connector compared to the PWM-controlled version. The changeover occurred around 2006.

To command a specific output charging voltage, the ECU must send a +5V PWM signal to the  "Turn On Signal” pin on the alternator (Pin 1). The normal operating duty cycle range is 5–95 percent at a frequency of 128 Hz. However, the alternator will self-excite and fail-safe to 13.8V when not controlled. The "Field Duty Cycle Signal" pin is used by the alternator to provide a feedback signal of the output charging voltage to the factory ECU and Body Control Module (BCM) and does not need to be connected to the Haltech ECU.
